Mysteries of the Neolithic Age: Discoveries at Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe

Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Gökhan Yazgı recently highlighted that the artefacts unearthed in Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe in Şanlıurfa have the potential to reshape our understanding of history. Yazgı emphasized the significance of Şanlıurfa as a major cultural tourism destination in Turkey and noted that the Şanlıurfa Neolithic Age Research Project, led by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is crucial for advancing our knowledge of the period.

Yazgı pointed out that excavations are currently underway in 12 different regions within Şanlıurfa. The Stone Hills Project, which includes Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, is expected to significantly impact historical narratives. He mentioned that the project aims to accomplish in the next four years what has previously been achieved over the past 60 years. Notably, the Karahantepe excavation has revealed numerous unique cultural assets and structures, with ongoing scientific studies suggesting that these discoveries may expand substantially.

The significance of these findings has drawn global attention, with the archaeological community eagerly anticipating new revelations. Yazgı remarked that the nature of archaeology involves constant discovery, and the curiosity surrounding these historical sites is immense. Scientists are meticulously tracing these findings, which require extensive research and analysis.

Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, although from similar periods, offer distinct insights due to their structural and functional differences. The implications of these discoveries will be a key topic at the World Neolithic Congress in Şanlıurfa this November. Yazgı is optimistic that the scientific results from the congress will have a profound impact on the global understanding of the Neolithic Age.
