A manned space mission that’s scheduled to depart in June’s second week will have a special guest on board. Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission with four astronauts will have a small plush swan with them. Named “Joy,” the doll symbolizes grace and elegance.

This zero-g indicator is deemed more than a cute companion for the Ax-4 crew as shortly after launch, it will be used as an indicator of physical confirmation that the crew has transitioned to microgravity.

Swan carries allegorical meanings across cultures

The mission will “realize the return” to human spaceflight for India, Poland, and Hungary, with each nation’s first government-sponsored flight in more than 40 years. While Ax-4 marks these countries’ second human spaceflight mission in history, it will be the first time all three nations will execute a mission on board the International Space Station, according to Axiom Space.

In the Ax-4 mission, the swan carries allegorical meanings across cultures. In India, it symbolizes wisdom and purity, representing the pursuit of truth. In Poland, the swan stands for purity, loyalty, and resilience, while in Hungary, it epitomizes loyalty, grace, and the beauty of nature.

By choosing a swan as the zero-g indicator, the Ax-4 crew celebrates the diversity of their cultures, united in the shared human experience of space exploration.

Advancing scientific knowledge

The mission, which will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, underscores how Axiom Space is redefining the pathway to low-Earth orbit and elevating national space programs globally.

“With a culturally diverse crew, we are not only advancing scientific knowledge but also fostering international collaboration,” said Peggy Whitson, Ax-4 Mission Commander.

“Our previous missions set the stage and with Ax-4, we ascend even higher, bringing more nations to low-Earth orbit and expanding humanity’s reach among the stars.”

The Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) crew will launch aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and travel to the space station.

Astronauts plan to spend up to 14 days aboard

After being docked, the astronauts plan to spend up to 14 days aboard the orbiting laboratory, conducting a mission comprised of science, outreach, and commercial activities. The mission will send the first ISRO astronaut to the station as part of a joint effort between NASA and the Indian space agency. The private mission also carries the first astronauts from Poland and Hungary to stay aboard the space station, according to details provided by NASA.

Whitson, former NASA astronaut and director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space, will command the commercial mission, while ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla will serve as pilot. The two mission specialists are ESA (European Space Agency) project astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.

“In Indian culture, the swan is the vehicle of Goddess Saraswati, symbolizing wisdom, learning, and purity,” said Shukla. “It is said to have the rare ability to separate milk from water, a symbolism that is a powerful reminder of discernment in an age of distraction. To carry the symbol is to carry the essence of our mission: pursuit of knowledge, clarity of purpose, and grace under pressure.”
