Homo sapiens is the last of a long hominid lineage that once consisted of five distinct species spanning four continents. Today, Homo sapiens is the last hominid of the genus Homo. Our closest relatives are the chimpanzee and the gorilla. But we differ from them in many ways. We have unparalleled abilities in abstract thought, language, and social cohesion. For decades, scientists have discovered that many of these human abilities are shared with other apes. The question then arises. What makes Homo sapiens different from other apes?
Current research suggests that the difference between humans and other apes is a matter of degree rather than kind. Although apes and other animals, including dolphins, have the capacity for abstract thought and language, these abilities are particularly pronounced in Homo sapiens. Areas in which Homo sapiens is superior to other apes include the production of material culture, social learning, altruism, and language ability.
Material Culture of Homo sapiens
There is little that archaeologists agree on regarding humans, but one thing they do agree on is that all humans have a culture that includes material culture. Material culture refers to anything that humans and other sentient creatures have intelligently produced or modified for some purpose.
The earliest evidence of human material culture is the stone tools made 2.5 million years ago by the earliest humans, Homo habilis, the first member of the genus Homo. The first human to adopt material culture as a primary method of adapting to the environment was Homo ergaster, who had a considerably more complex array of stone tools than Homo habilis, but the stone tools made by Homo ergaster were still primitive compared to those developed later by Homo sapiens.
The material culture created by Homo sapiens was even more prolific and complex. Spear throwers, needles, knives, paintings, bows, wheels, steam engines, cell phones, and rockets are all examples of material culture that only Homo sapiens (present humans) produced. The present humans were able to use their versatile tool-making abilities to adapt to almost every known climatic regime and environment, from the rainforest to the tundra to outer space.

Chimpanzees also have the ability to make technology, but chimpanzee technology seems to be limited to simple sticks and stones. There is evidence that chimpanzees occasionally sharpen sticks to make spears, but for now, these simple spears appear to represent the cutting edge of chimpanzee technological development. The same is true for nonhuman apes. Compared to Homo sapiens and other human species, the archaeological record of apes’ technology is largely blank.
Learning for Learning’s Sake
Another characteristic of humans compared to apes is the degree to which they are able to learn through social behavior. Experiments show that both human infants and chimpanzees learn through imitation. However, an important difference between chimpanzees and Homo sapiens is that chimpanzees tend to learn rewarding behaviors but skip those that are not rewarding. In other words, chimpanzees will perform a behavior that they know will help them achieve a goal, but if the behavior does not bring them closer to their goal, they will quickly abandon or skip the behavior.
Human infants, on the other hand, do not imitate only rewarded behaviors, but also those that are not rewarded. Chimpanzees imitate behaviors because the behaviors help them obtain rewards, whereas humans appear to imitate behaviors in order to learn how to behave like other humans. Human infants also internalize learned behaviors and show emotional reactions when tasks they have been taught are done differently or “the wrong way” by others. Homo sapiens – overly social apes
This social learning ability shows how highly social humans are compared to other apes. Another example is human altruism. Chimpanzees, for example, are almost always altruistic only to their own kin group, and even then female chimpanzees do not readily share with their offspring.
Humans, on the other hand, are widely supportive and sharing with non-relatives. According to experimental economics, human behavior may contradict the models of market economics and evolutionary biology, in which individuals are inherently selfish and self-interested. In games used in economics to test theories about human nature, humans often choose the option that favors cooperation and generosity over the option that favors the individual over the group. Chimpanzees subjected to similar tests almost always choose the option that favors the individual. Other great apes are also altruistic, but their altruism appears to be more limited than that of humans.
Linguistic Maestros
Another feature that distinguishes humans from other apes in many respects is their unusually well-developed linguistic abilities. Studies of ape languages indicate that gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans all possess the capacity for language. Many apes learned sign language in captivity and acquired it in the same way that human infants acquire language. Despite this remarkable achievement, even when chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans were taught language, they never surpassed the learning stage of human infants. The language and cognitive abilities of adult apes other than Homo sapiens seem to be forever frozen at the level of human preschoolers. Homo sapiens is not the only species capable of using language, but only modern humans have taught themselves grammatical language. All other apes that use language had to be taught its use by humans.
Language is deeply ingrained in human thought and behavior patterns, in contrast to apes in the wild, who, for the most part, do not even use language as we understand it. Most social situations that we consider normal are so embedded in language that they would not be possible without it. Games, classes, celebrations, and religious rituals are all examples of human social events that would not have existed or would have been quite different without language. Humans are not only social and cultural animals, they are also linguistic animals.
The Sophistication of Homo Sapiens
Most of the characteristics of humans are found in other species to varying degrees. What makes humans unique, however, is the degree to which we possess or use those traits. Compared to other apes, humans are highly social, use culture primarily to adapt to their environment, and are very skilled at language. The reasons why these traits have become so prominent in humans are not fully understood, but they make humans adaptable and resilient to environmental change. Rapid environmental change associated with a fluctuating climate during the Pleistocene may have produced these traits in humans over a long period of time, giving rise to Homo sapiens.
According to a study published in Science Advances in 2021, only 7% of the human genome is unique to the human species. The remaining DNA is shared with other hominids, including Neanderthals and Denisovans.
The authors of this study analyzed DNA from more than 1,000 individuals from around the world, as well as DNA from Neanderthals and Denisowans. They found that human-specific genes are involved in a variety of functions, including brain development, immunity, and metabolism.
The authors of the study concluded that human specificity is not due to a single gene or group of genes. Rather, it is likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
