Scientists have killed 95 percent of breast cancer cells

A new cancer treatment, developed by scientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), is capable of destroying up to 100 percent of breast tumor cells. The results of the study are published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The authors of the work have created a drug ErSO, which fights both primary tumors and metastases. Experiments have shown that mice tolerate ErSO well even at high doses. Within a few days of starting therapy, cancer cells shrank by more than 99 percent on average.

The uniqueness of the method is that it has no side effects. ErSO activity depends on the estrogen receptor found in most breast tumors. When combined with it, the drug activates the cellular pathway a-UPR, which prepares diseased cells for rapid growth and protects them from stress.

“Even when a few cancer cells survive, allowing the tumors to grow back over a period of several months, the neoplasms remain completely susceptible to repeated ErSO treatments,” concluded biochemist David Shapiro, one of the study’s authors.

Scientists plan to test the drug’s effectiveness in humans and see if it works against other types of cancer.

Three types of cancer that may disappear in the coming decades

According to experts from the World Health Organization, humanity has every chance of defeating several types of cancer in the coming decades. RIA Novosti understands which cancers are becoming a thing of the past and why.

WHO representative Melita Vujnovich said that humanity will not defeat cancer in ten years, but it will definitely cope with some of its species. And above all, world medicine is close to defeating cervical cancer, which today is considered the fourth most common among women. More than 570 thousand new cases are registered in the world annually, and 7.5 percent of deaths from malignant tumors are accounted for by this type of cancer
