Is This the Future of Intelligence? Meet the AI-Connected Lab Rat That Thinks Like a Human

In a groundbreaking experiment, Russian biotech lab Neiry, in collaboration with Moscow State University, has successfully connected a rat’s brain to artificial intelligence (AI). Known as Pythia, this super-smart rodent can answer complex questions across fields like physics, history, and neurophysiology, leveraging AI for access to vast internet resources. This revolutionary development may pave the way for AI-assisted human cognition.

AI-Connected Neurointerface: How It Works
The research team implanted an invasive neurointerface into Pythia’s brain, directly linking it to an AI system. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

Implantation of Neurointerface: Electrodes implanted in Pythia’s brain stimulate specific areas, creating distinct physical sensations. These signals serve as cues for the rat to respond accurately to questions.

AI-Driven Sensory Prompts: The AI prompts Pythia with “yes” or “no” responses, translated through sensations felt in different parts of her body. Pythia learns to identify the correct answer by associating these sensations with rewards for correct answers.

This innovative feedback system, called “Artificial Intuition” (AIIntuition), allows Pythia to respond to scientific queries, from complex physics to neurophysiology.

The Vision of AI-Neurointegration for Humanity
As part of the larger “IIntuition” project, the Neiry and MSU team envisions expanding this technology to enhance human cognitive abilities. The goal is to create a commercially available neurointerface that can link human minds to extensive databases, streamlining the process of gaining and intuitively understanding information.

Revolutionary Insights from Project Leaders
According to Vasily Popkov, head of the neurointerface development lab at MSU, the experiment’s goal was to test the efficacy of these newly designed electrodes. Popkov states, “This experiment merges natural and artificial intelligence, and it’s a step toward our broader aspirations for AI-brain collaboration.”

Professor Mikhail Lebedev of MSU emphasizes the existential questions this project seeks to address. “We’re at the beginning of a revolution. Integrating AI with natural intelligence will allow AI to handle memory and information processing, while the human brain retains creativity, intuition, and consciousness,” he says, envisioning a peaceful coexistence of AI and human intelligence.

Future Applications of AI-Assisted Cognition
Neiry CEO Alexander Panov envisions a future where humans intuitively discern truth from falsehood or instantly identify correct answers. According to Panov, “With AIIntuition, humans will achieve greater efficiency, a natural evolution toward advancing human capability. Our project is a stepping stone to this next stage of human evolution.”

Looking Forward: Pythia’s Legacy in AI and Neurotechnology
Pythia’s success marks a significant milestone in the field of AI and neurotechnology. As researchers continue to expand their experiments, additional exciting announcements are anticipated. The Neiry and MSU collaboration underscores a profound shift in cognitive science, suggesting a future where AI serves as an integrated partner in the quest for knowledge and human advancement.
