An international team of physicists, backed by the Foundational Questions Institute (FQxI), has explored the phenomenon of biophotons—faint light emissions from living organisms. By statistically analyzing light emitted from lentil seeds, the researchers aim to uncover whether these biophotons serve as a medium for information exchange within plants, potentially revealing a form of intelligence.

Nearly a century ago, Russian biologist Alexander Gurwitsch discovered that onions emit weak electromagnetic fields, particularly during cell growth. Since then, research has confirmed that bacteria, plants, animals, and humans all emit biophotons. According to physicist Catalina Curceanu from Italy’s National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), some scientists propose that biophotons are involved in the exchange of information, although the exact mechanism remains unclear.
