Unveiling Africa’s Climate Secrets: A Warning for Today?

Around five and a half millennia ago, northern Africa underwent a dramatic transformation. The Sahara desert expanded, displacing grasslands, forests, and lakes. Humans were forced to retreat to the mountains, oases, and the Nile valley and delta. This transition led to the emergence of ancient Egypt.



This shift from the African humid period, lasting from 15,000 to 5,500 years ago, to the current arid conditions in northern Africa is a clear example of a climate tipping point. Our recent study published in Nature Communications reveals that before northern Africa dried out, its climate oscillated between two stable states before tipping permanently, indicating potential future tipping points in regions experiencing highly variable climate cycles.

As global warming surpasses 1.5°C, potential tipping points include the collapse of ice sheets, coral reef die-offs, and Arctic permafrost thawing. The interpretation of warning signs for these shifts is challenging, as they vary depending on the type of tipping point and may involve periods of stability before abrupt change.

To investigate further, an international team of scientists drilled sediment cores from the basin of Chew Bahir in southern Ethiopia, providing a record of the past 620,000 years of climate and environmental history in eastern Africa. Analysis revealed frequent and extreme wet-dry fluctuations, indicating pronounced climate flickering. This phenomenon, observed during previous climate transitions, occurred naturally long before human influence.

This natural transition challenges the notion that human activities hastened the end of the African humid period. However, humans undoubtedly felt the effects of climate flickering, with dramatic impacts on their settlements and lifestyles. Archaeological evidence suggests population movements corresponding to wet and dry phases, with ultimate retreat to consistently wet regions like the Nile valley.

Identifying precursors to major climate shifts, such as rapid wet-dry cycles, could provide early warnings for future climate changes. This is particularly crucial for regions like eastern Africa, home to nearly 500 million people highly vulnerable to climate-induced impacts such as drought.
