No Signals Detected, But What Does That Mean for Our Search for Extraterrestrial Life?

A recent search across more than 1,300 galaxies for alien signals has provided valuable insights into the potential existence of communicating civilizations beyond Earth.

The Search Parameters

The survey, led by Chenoa Tremblay of the SETI Institute and Steven Tingay from Curtin University, utilized the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in Australia. Unlike typical SETI searches that focus on the 1,420 MHz hydrogen emission frequency, this study explored the less-traveled low-frequency range of 80–300 MHz. The search targeted a 30-degree field in the constellation Vela, focusing on 1,317 galaxies with accurately measured distances. This allowed the team to estimate the potential power of any alien transmitters.

What Were the Findings?

While no extraterrestrial signals were detected, the study set important limits on the power of possible alien transmitters. Tremblay and Tingay concluded that they could have detected signals with a transmitter power of 7 x 10^22 watts at 100 MHz.

“This work is a significant step forward in our efforts to detect signals from advanced extraterrestrial civilizations,” Tremblay stated.

Why Haven’t We Found Anything Yet?

The lack of detections doesn’t rule out the existence of technological extraterrestrial life. It could mean that such civilizations are rare or that their signals are weaker than our current detection capabilities. Additionally, the vastness of the universe means we’ve only explored a tiny fraction of it.

The Kardashev Scale and Power Requirements

To emit the powerful signals we’re searching for, an alien civilization would likely need to harness the energy of a star or multiple stars. According to the Kardashev scale, a Type 2 civilization could harness the power of an entire star, while a Type 3 civilization could utilize the power of all stars in a galaxy.

The Future of SETI Searches

Tremblay and Tingay emphasize the need for continued exploration across different frequencies to increase our chances of detecting extraterrestrial signals. “Covering the frequency space will be crucial in the future,” they concluded.
