Professor Passchier and his team have spent over 15 years investigating these rock tunnels. Their research suggests that the organisms responsible for these formations may have burrowed through the rock in search of nutrients. The tunnels, now filled with a fine powder of pure calcium carbonate, indicate that the microorganisms may have processed this mineral for survival.
The fact that similar structures were later identified in Oman and Saudi Arabia further reinforces the theory that these were biologically formed rather than a result of natural erosion or mineral reactions. But what kind of life form could have survived deep inside the rock, away from light and external nutrients?

Endolithic microorganisms—organisms that live inside rocks—are known to thrive in extreme environments, including deserts and deep-sea vents. Many of these life forms play a crucial role in breaking down minerals and cycling carbon. But the rock tunnels discovered in Namibia and beyond present a new enigma.
