A recently discovered exoplanet, KMT-2020-BLG-0414, sits 4,000 light-years away, orbiting a dying white dwarf star. This rocky planet, about twice the size of Earth, could represent one potential future for our world if it escapes being engulfed by the sun’s red giant phase.

Before our sun transitions into a white dwarf, it will expand into a red giant, possibly swallowing Mercury, Venus, and perhaps Earth itself. If Earth survives this cosmic event, it could resemble KMT-2020-BLG-0414. But regardless of the red giant phase, Earth will only remain habitable for another billion years due to the runaway greenhouse effect, which will boil away the oceans long before the red giant transformation.

The planet, twice the size of Earth, orbits its white dwarf star at a similar distance to Earth’s orbit around the sun.
