What it discovered baffled planetary scientists for decades: a radiation belt of electrons far stronger than anything predicted.

Voyager 2’s “Off-the-Charts” Electron Radiation Belt Discovery

During its brief encounter, Voyager 2 detected electron intensities dramatically higher than models based on Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn had suggested. Given Uranus’ tilted magnetic field, sideways rotation, and unusual magnetosphere, scientists struggled to explain how the planet could sustain such a powerful trapped electron population.

Researchers now propose that one such CIR was likely passing through the Uranian system in 1986, directly influencing the radiation belt measurements Voyager 2 recorded.

“Science has come a long way since the Voyager 2 flyby,” said SwRI’s Dr. Robert Allen, lead author of the study published in Geophysical Research Letters. “We adopted a comparative approach, placing the old Voyager 2 data beside decades of modern Earth observations.”

This shift in perspective led to a surprising realization: the Voyager readings resemble the signatures produced at Earth during large solar wind storms—particularly those that energize our own radiation belts.

High-Frequency Waves: From Electron Loss to Electron Acceleration

The new study suggests Uranus may have been experiencing a major space weather event at the exact time of Voyager 2’s arrival. This event triggered extremely intense high-frequency plasma waves—the strongest recorded during the entire mission.

In 1986, scientists believed such waves would scatter electrons and drain the radiation belt into the atmosphere. But modern research shows the opposite can also occur.

Under the right conditions, these waves can accelerate electrons, injecting even more energy into the system.

“If a similar mechanism acted at Uranus,” explained co-author Dr. Sarah Vines, “it would fully explain why Voyager 2 measured such unexpectedly high energy levels.”

The comparison deepened when scientists noted that Earth experienced a nearly identical event in 2019, one that dramatically boosted radiation belt electron energies.

Implications for Uranus, Neptune, and Future Missions

This new theory does more than solve an old mystery—it raises deeper questions about planetary magnetospheres:

How often do extreme solar wind structures interact with distant planets like Uranus?

What unknown processes amplify these wave emissions?

Could other ice giants, such as Neptune, exhibit similar hidden extremes?

“These results provide one more compelling reason to send a dedicated mission to Uranus,” Allen emphasized. “We still lack crucial information about the physics shaping these distant worlds.”

As interest in a NASA flagship mission to Uranus grows, this renewed understanding of the planet’s radiation environment may play a key role in mission planning.
