British scientists have found an unexpected way to restore tooth enamel – using keratin, which can be obtained from hair or wool. The development has already shown that the protein is able not only to protect teeth from caries, but also to literally “register” the lost areas.

Scientists from London offer a revolutionary approach to dental treatment – to use ceratin from hair. The new method can not only restore enamel, but also make the dentistry more environmentally friendly

Caries and the destruction of enamel are one of the most common health problems. They affect about every fourth person in the world.

Treatment is often expensive, painful and leaves noticeable traces – metal, glass or plastic fillings. The problem is that the enamel does not recover by itself, unlike bones or hair.

New technology

In a new study published in the journal Advanced Healthcare Materials, scientists from King’s College London used keratin – protein that is found in hair, wool and even animal skin.

In the laboratory, he was removed from sheep’s wool, cleaned, frozen and dried. It turned out that keratin naturally binds to calcium in the teeth, forming a layer that behaves almost the same as natural enamel.

Toothpaste of the future

The researchers suggest that on the basis of keratin, you can make toothpaste or a special gel that not only relieves pain and protects against caries, but also repairs damage. Unlike traditional materials, keratin can accurately repeat the color of the tooth and looks more natural.

Eco-friendly plus

The technology is environmentally friendly. Raw materials can be obtained from biological waste – for example, trimmed hair or wool – without the use of toxic plastic resins used in modern dentistry.

When to wait

The team is already preparing the technology for clinical trials. If all goes according to plan, “have hairpast” may appear on sale for several years.
